ELSAConnect is an initiative of ELSA Bangalore
Date: 20th March, 2022
An ELSAConnect session with Kavitha Iyer was held on Sunday 20th March, 2022. The session was curated by Priti David.
Kavitha Iyer is from the batch of 2000. A journalist and editor for over 21 years, including a long stint with The Indian Express, she has spent most of her career writing about Indians on the margins — slum dwellers, landless labourers, small farmers, indigenous communities and women.
Her first book Landscapes Of Loss: The Story of an Indian Drought was published in 2021 by HarperCollins and won the TataLiteratureLive Best First Book 2021 award in the non-fiction category.
Kavitha was also a 2021 fellow of the Logan Nonfiction Program through which she continued reporting and writing her second book, tentatively scheduled for a summer 2023 release. As an independent journalist, Kavitha writes for Article-14, People’s Archive of Rural India, Al Jazeera and others.
When she’s not working, Kavitha likes to lift some serious weights in the gym or drive solo around the Maharashtra countryside. She dreams of making Indian media houses much, much more diverse and inclusive.
